CHAPEL HILL, NC - Charlotte drops a hard fought battle to in-state rival #21 North Carolina, 6-4.
Charlotte's George Sandel led the 49ers with three hits in the game.
Charlotte took an early 1-0 lead when Thomas Bowker scored on Brad Lamm's infield groundout to short in the first inning.
North Carolina took a 2-1 lead with two runs on three hits in the second inning. Ryan Blake scored the first run a Chad Prosser double to left center field. Then, Prosser scored the other run on Jeremy Cleveland's single to left field.
Charlotte regained the lead, 3-2, with two runs on four hits in the third inning. George Sandel scored the inning's first run on a Brad Erwin single to center field. Then, Lamm scored the second run of the inning on a Joey Bradshaw infield single.
North Carolina regained the lead for good, 5-3, with three runs on five hits. Ryan Blake, Chad Prosser and Mel Adams scored for North Carolina in the inning.
Charlotte cut the North Carolina lead to 5-4 when Sandel scored on Lamm's single to right center field in the fifth inning.
North Carolina added an insurance run in the eighth inning on Jeremy Cleveland's two-out home run over the left center field wall.
With the loss, Charlotte falls to 16-16 on the season. While, North Carolina improved to 23-11 on the season.
The 49ers return to action this weekend, April 12-14, with a three-game series at home with Conference USA foe East Carolina. The first two games of the series will be played at Kannapolis' Fieldcrest-Cannon Stadium. The first game of the series will be Friday, April 12 at 6:35 pm.
