Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers shut out the Saint Joseph's Hawks for the second straight day, winning 4-0 at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium Saturday evening in Atlantic 10 baseball action. The shut out was Charlotte's eighth of the season, tying the team record from 1990. Charlotte is a school-record 25-5, 7-1 in A-10 play. The Hawks drop to 4-22, 2-6 in league play.
Charlotte got on the board early when senior Cory Lane hit the first pitch of his second at-bat over the fence down the right field line to get the Niners on the scoreboard 1-0.
Charlotte scored two unearned runs in the sixth, when starting pitcher Spencer Steedley hit a two-out, two-RBI triple to make it 3-0. Charlotte has 22 triples this season, seven shy of the school record, set in 2005.
The Niners got another run in the seventh on four walks and a fielder's choice with an RBI by outfielder Brad McElroy. McElroy was held without a hit, ending his 13-game hit streak.
Steedley and reliever B.J. Hagen combined for the shutout. Steedley lasted 7.2 innings, striking out six and walking three to get the win and improve to 5-0 this season. He allowed only five hits on the evening. Hagen gave up one hit in the final 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball.
Saint Joseph's starter Randall Mower allowed just one earned run in six innings of work. He gave up six hits and two walks, striking out four.
Hawks left fielder Jereme Scott was two-for-two and drew a walk. Four other Hawks had a hit on the day.
Steedley and third baseman Alex Bryant had a pair of hits each for Charlotte. Steedley also had two RBI, helping his own cause in the game.
Charlotte and Saint Joseph's will finish the series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
