Eighth Inning Homer Snaps 49ers' Eight Game Win Streak

Freshman Zach Rosenbaum pitches well in first collegiate start for Charlotte

March 9, 2006

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - Freshman Zach Rosenbaum (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings in his first collegiate start, but Patrick Oates hit a two-out, three run homer in the top of the eighth inning to give North Carolina A&T a 3-2 win over the Charlotte 49ers on Thursday afternoon at Tom and Lib Phillips Field.

Rosenbaum was good in his first start for Charlotte (12-3), allowing just three hits and four walks in 6 2/3 scoreless innings. He struck out five.

The 49ers, though, had their eight-game winning streak snapped with the loss to A&T (5-9).

In the top of the eighth, reliever Sam Pierce got the first two outs before allowing consecutive singles to Joe McIntyre and Chris Gamble. Oates worked Pierce to a full count in the next at-bat, fouling off one potential third strike, before turning on a pitch to left field for a homer and a 3-2 Aggies lead.

After Pierce recovered to get the final out of the eighth, Erik Walker allowed just one hit and struck out two in the top of the ninth.

The Niners were unable to put anyone on in their last two turns at bat, going 1-2-3 in both the eighth and ninth innings.

North Carolina A&T starter Chris Eggers allowed eight hits to the Niners through eight innings, but Charlotte was able to push just single runs across in the first and third.

O'Brien Taylor (2-for-4, double), Mike Ambrose and Aaron Bray each had two hits apiece for the 49ers, accounting for six of the team's eight hits on the day.

Charlotte has three games remaining at home this weekend, as they host Siena on Saturday and Sunday. Both days' action will begin at noon, while Saturday will be a doubleheader between the 49ers and Saints.
