CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte behind solid pitching from John Maine and two homeruns defeated UNC Wilmington 7-5. This was the 49ers fourth win in a row.
Charlotte took an early 1-0 lead when Thomas Bowker connected on a home run over the centerfield wall in the first inning.
Charlotte increased their lead to 3-0 with two runs on one hit in the third inning. Blackmon, who led off the inning with a walk, scored on an infield groundout. Then, George Sandel, who singled to reach base, scored on another infield groundout.
Charlotte increased their lead to 5-0 with two runs in the fourth inning. The 49ers had the first three runners reach base in the inning to load the bases. Brad Lamm scored Charlotte's first run of the inning on an infield groundout. Chris Brake scored the second run of the inning on a Bowker single to left field.
UNC Wilmington cut into the Charlotte lead with two runs in the sixth inning. Justin Wishon and David McKenna both walked to begin the inning. Then, they would both score on Jamie Heningway's two-run single to centerfield.
Then, Charlotte increased their lead to 7-2 when Brad Erwin connected on a two-out two-run homerun over the rightfield wall in the seventh inning.
UNC Wilmington scored three runs in the ninth inning to make the final score 7-5. In the inning, UNC Wilmington had three hits to score those three runs. The big hit was a two-out two-run double by Magnus Pilegard down the rightfield line.
Charlotte pitcher John Maine improved to 4-2 on the season after scattering seven hits and allowing two runs over eight innings. Charlotte pitcher Jacob Chaney got a UNC Wilmington flyball out to end the game as he picked up his second save. UNC Wilmington starting pitcher Charlie Weatherby took the loss after allowing five runs in three innings.
