Kannapolis, N.C. - All nine Charlotte 49ers starters scored at least one run in a 16-7 college baseball victory over Colonial Athletic Association Champion James Madison to start a three-game series Friday afternoon at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis. Charlotte improves to 8-3, including a 5-0 home record, dropping the Dukes to 1-5 to start the season. James Madison loaded a bus to travel to South Carolina to take on The Citadel later in the evening in Rock Hill.
Charlotte senior catcher Kris Rochelle was three-for-three and knocked in four runs, while left fielder Brad McElroy had four hits and three RBI, scoring three times on the day.
Charlotte put up four runs and sent all nine hitters up in the first two innings and added four more in the fourth to surge to an early lead. McElroy and designated hitter Chris Taylor each got a hit and scored a run in both of the first two innings, knocking in a run each in that span. Charlotte scored in five of its eight innings of offense.
Charlotte starter Adam Mills allowed unearned runs in the first and third innings, but gave up his first earned runs in 23.2 innings pitched in the fifth inning. Mills lasted five and two-thirds, his shortest start of the season, to get the win (4-0). He allowed seven hits and three walks, striking out five to push his season total to 50 strikeouts in five starts. Two of his four runs were earned.
JMU starter Kurt Houck took the loss (0-2). He lasted 3.2 innings, allowing 12 runs, all earned, on 14 hits and three walks. Houck struck out three on the afternoon. Charlotte only managed four hits in the final four innings, but plated four runs on five walks, a sacrifice fly and an error, thanks to aggressive baserunning and timely hitting.
Second baseman Cory Lane hit his team-leading ninth double and third triple in the game. Lane leads Charlotte with 13 extra-base hits this season. Charlotte is hitting 100 points better than the opposition this season.
