Mills, Ambrose Lead Charge in 11-3 Win Over Indiana

Mills tosses 7 strong innings while Ambrose ties school record with three doubles

Feb. 24, 2006

Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - Adam Mills allowed no runs and just four hits in seven innings for his second win of the season, as the Charlotte 49ers defeated Indiana 11-3 on Friday afternoon at Tom & Lib Phillips Field. Offensively, shortstop Mike Ambrose was 4-for-5 and tied the school record with three doubles - all hit consecutively - as the Niners improved to 5-2 this season by winning in the first game of a three-day weekend series.

Mills did not allow a hit until a single leading off the fourth. Each of the four hits he allowed were singles, and the only potential run against him was erased when Chris Lane's throw from center field nailed pinch hitter Keith Haas trying to score from second on a single up the middle.

Charlotte (5-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Cory Lane started the inning by hitting the game's second pitch over the fence in right field for his first homer of the season.

Indiana (0-1) then committed three errors in the inning to allow three unearned runs to score.

Ambrose would stroke the first of three consecutive doubles in the bottom of the first, adding two-baggers in the third and fifth to tie the school's record. He finished 4-for-5 on the day, scoring on all three of his doubles.

Leading 5-0, the 49ers put the game out of reach with five more runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Aaron Bray singled, Ambrose doubled and Spencer Steedley walked to load the bases. Chris Taylor's single drove in the first run, before Kris Rochelle forced in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Alan Parks' RBI single would make the score 8-0, and Adam Floyd (fielder's choice) and Chris Lane (single) would each plate a run for a 10-0 score.

Indiana would score three runs in the top of the eighth on a solo home run, an RBI single and an RBI groundout.

With a pair of runners on and two outs in that half inning, second baseman Cory Lane perfectly timed his jump to make a great leaping catch of Ben Greenspan's line drive, ending the threat.

Senior left-hander Matt Landphair worked a perfect ninth inning, striking out a pair of batters to end the game.

Parks finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Steedley was 1-for-2 with three walks, while Cory Lane was 2-for-5.

These two teams will meet at noon on both Saturday and Sunday to finish this non-conference series.
