Mills Tosses Three-Hit, Three-Walk Complete Game Shutout as Charlotte Blanks Campbell 1-0

Alex Burt's RBI Single in the Sixth Inning Enough to Garner Victory

Feb. 23, 2007

Final Stats

Kannapolis, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers senior righty Adam Mills tossed his first complete game shutout of 2007, allowing just three hits, three walks and a hit batter, while striking out 13 Camels in Charlotte's 1-0 win over Campbell University at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis on Friday afternoon. The nine-inning game lasted just 2:04, as Mills and Campbell starter Quinn LeSage worked quickly through the batting orders. Mills moves to 3-0 with the win and Charlotte improves to 6-2 on the season. LeSage drops to 0-3, while Campbell's record falls to 1-6.

Mills has struck out 12, 14 and now 13 batters in his last three starts. He has 45 strikeouts in four starts this season, way beyond his pace of 111 last season. In 29 innings pitched, his ERA drops to 0.93, allowing just three earned runs on 14 hits and eight walks in 2007.

The only run of the game came in the sixth, when sophomore third baseman Aaron Bray lined a one-out triple down the right field line. He was brought home by first baseman Alex Burt on a single to left field in the next at-bat.

The Niners had three extra-base hits, including a pair of triples, and left 13 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in three different innings. Senior Cory Lane had the other Charlotte triple and added a double, both to right field, in the game. Every Charlotte hitter but one had a hit, with Cory Lane the only hitter with a pair of hits for the Niners.

Campbell left fielder Brandon Scott had a pair of singles, but only a Robb Meng single and three walks were all the Fighting Camels could muster as far as baserunners were concerned. Mills picked one runner off base, catcher Kris Rochelle threw out another trying to steal and Charlotte turned a double play so Campbell left five on base for the day. No Campbell baserunner touched third base in the contest.

The shutout is Charlotte's fifth of the season in eight games, nearly doubling last season's three shutouts. Charlotte has outscored opponents 70-17 this season and Charlotte pitching has a staff ERA of 1.38 through eight games. Charlotte has allowed three runs in their last five contests. Mills and fellow senior Spencer Steedley have both thrown complete game shutouts so far this year.

The two teams head back out to the diamond tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
