CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte defeated George Washington 7-1 behind solid pitching from John Maine and 12 hits in the first game of a three-game series.
Charlotte starting pitcher John Maine scatttered nine hits and allowed one run over a season-high eight innings to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Charlotte jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Brad Erwin's two-run home run over the centerfield wall in the first inning. That was Erwin's third home run of the season.
George Washington cut the Charlotte lead to 2-1 in the fourth inning. Matt Krimmel reached base with two outs after getting hit by a pitch. He then scored the Colonials only run when Mike Bassett doubled off the center field wall.
Charlotte increased their lead to 3-1 with a run in the fourth inning. Mike Taylor led off the inning with a single to center field. He would later score on an Eric Shanks fielder's choice.
Charlotte increased their lead to 7-1 with four runs in the fifth inning on four hits. The first two hits of the inning were doubles by Nick Blackmon and George Sandel. Blackmon would score on Sandel's double. Then, Sandel would score on a Taylor fielder's choice for the second run in the inning. Thomas Bowker, who reached base on an infield single, would score the inning's third run on a Shanks infield groundout. Then, Taylor scored the final run of the inning on a Derek Dixon single to center field.
Charlotte continues their three-game series with George Washington, Saturday, February 24 at 12 pm.
