WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Charlotte lost on the road to instate rival Wake Forest 17-8.

Charlotte scored the game's first run in the first inning. Mike Taylor, who reached base on a fielder's choice with two outs, scored the game's first run on Brad Erwin's single to left center field.

Wake Forest took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Cory Sullivan leadoff the inning with a double down the right field line. Then, Nick Blue walked giving Wake their first two batters on base in the inning. Sullivan would tie the game on a Charlotte throwing error. Then, Blue would make the score 2-1 when he scored on a bases loaded sacrifice fly to center field by Carlos Brackley.

Charlotte tied the game at 2-2 in the second inning. Brad Lamm and Chris Brake each reached base to begin the inning after being hit by pitches. Then, they both advanced a base on a Wake Forest pass ball. Lamm would tie the game when he scored on a Nick Blackmon infield groundout.

Wake Forest retook the lead at 3-2 in the bottom of the second inning. Matt Price led off the inning with a walk. He then stole second base. Price would score on a Stephen Ghutzman single to right field.

Wake Forest added another run in the third inning on Brackley's solo home run over the left field wall.

Wake Forest took control of the game with seven runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 11-2.

Charlotte scored a run in the fifth inning to cut the Wake Forest lead to 11-3. Taylor, who reached base on an error, scored on an Eric Shanks infield single.

Wake Forest added three runs in the fifth and sixth inning making the score 17-3.

 

 

Charlotte then cut the Wake Forest lead to 17-6 with three runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Brad Erwin doubled with one out. He then scored on Jacob Chaney's pinch hit single to right field. Chaney would score on a Tim Nalls' fielders choice. Brad Lamm, who singled to left field, would score the other run on a Wake Forest error.

Charlotte cut the lead to 17-8 when they scored two runs in the eighth inning. George Sandel led off the inning with a single to left field. Then, Brian Bowman reached second base on a Wake Forest error. Sandel advanced to third base on the play. Then, Sandel scored on a wild pitch. Bowman would score on Erwin's sacrifice fly to center field.

Wake Forest relief pitcher Ryan Lewis improved to 2-0 on the season with his two innings of relief. Charlotte starting pitcher Zachary Treadway took the loss in his first career start.

Charlotte returns to action when they host George Washington in a three-game series this weekend. The series begins Friday, February 23 at 4 pm.
