Box Score

Charlotte, N.C. - Senior right-hander Derek McDaid allowed just two earned runs over the first five innings, and five 49er starters drove in two runs apiece as Charlotte completed a three-game sweep of non-conference foe Canisius with a 12-4 win at Tom & Lib Phillips Field on Sunday afternoon.

Charlotte moved its season record to 4-1 with the victory, which dropped Canisius to 0-3.

Sunday's game began at 1:15 p.m. after the two teams played the final three innings of Charlotte's 18-5 game two win, which was postponed from Saturday due to rain and cold temperatures.

McDaid allowed just six hits over five innings, walking one while striking out three. He evened his record at 1-1 on the season after taking a hard-luck loss in a relief role last Sunday vs. Wake Forest.

Junior reliever Matt Foard allowed one unearned run over three innings, while freshman Sam Pierce closed out the game by striking out the side in the ninth.

On the offensive side, Cory Lane, Aaron Bray, Mike Ambrose, Chris Taylor and Alan Parks all had two RBI for the victors.

Taylor continued his hot hitting by going 3-for-3 with two walks, raising his season batting average to .524 through the first five games of the year. It was the third multiple-RBI game for the sophomore catcher/designated hitter.

Cory Lane matched Taylor with a game-high three hits, while Kris Rochelle and Bray each had two.

Parks collected his first collegiate hit and RBIs in the third inning, when he tripled to right center field to drive in two runs.

The 49ers continue to like the three-bagger, as they have collected four triples in their first five games.

The Niners took command of the game with three runs in the bottom of the second and five in the bottom of the third for a 9-2 lead.

Along with Parks' 2-run triple, Cory Lane and Bray drove in runs on singles to help ignite the 5-run third inning.

Both teams left a lot of offense on the table, with Canisius stranding 11 runners to Charlotte's 12.

For the Golden Griffins, freshman Kevin Mahoney stayed hot to start his collegiate career with two hits in the game.

Charlotte will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the team's first road game of the season on Tuesday afternoon. The 49ers take on Wake Forest, with whom they split a season-opening doubleheader last weekend. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
