CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Behind solid pitching from Pat Gambale and Jacob Chaney, Charlotte defeated Penn State, 4-3, in the series finale.
Penn State scored first with two runs in the second inning. Donnie Wright leadoff the inning with a single to right field. He then later scored on a John Richmond double to left field. Then, George Everly, who had reached base on an infield single, scored later in the inning on a Willie Melendez sacrifice fly to left field.
Charlotte cut the Penn State lead to 2-1 when Nick Blackmon leadoff the third inning with a triple off the center field wall. He, then scored Charlotte's first run on George Sandel's single to left field.
Charlotte tied the game at 2-2 when Sandel leadoff the fifth inning with a walk. He then scored the tying run on a Thomas Bowker double to center field.
Charlotte then took the lead for good with two runs in the sixth inning. The 49ers began the inning with Brad Lamm and Chris Brake reaching base after getting hit by pitches. They both advanced a base on Tim Nalls' sacrifice bunt. Lamm would then score the game winning run on a wild pitch from Penn State reliever Mike Watson. Then, Sandel connected on his second RBI single of the game to right center field scoring Brake giving Charlotte a 4-2 lead.
Penn State made the final deficit 4-3 when Donnie Wright connected on a two-out solo home run over the right center field wall in the eighth inning.
Charlotte starting pitcher Pat Gambale scattered five hits and allowed two runs over six innings for his first career win. Charlotte relief pitcher Jacob Chaney had a career-high eight strikeouts over three innings for his first career save. Penn State relief pitcher Mike Watson lost his first game of the season.
