CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte fell to Penn State, 7-2, in their home-opener Saturday afternoon at Tom and Lib Phillips Field.
Charlotte scored first with two runs off three hits in the second inning. Tim Nalls singled with one out to right field for the first base runner of the inning. He moved to third on a Derek Dixon single to right field. Nalls scored the game's first run on a Nick Blackmon single to right field. Dixon would then score Charlotte's second run on an infield groundout.
Penn State cut the Charlotte lead to 2-1 with a run in the third inning. Mike Hurey scored Penn State's run on a Donnie Wright single to right field.
Penn State tied the game at 2-2 when Adam Warchal doubled to lead off the fourth inning. He then advanced to third on a Charlotte wild pitch. He later scored on an Penn State infield groundout.
Penn State took the lead for good with two runs on two Charlotte errors in the fifth inning. Zack Smithlin and Chris Wright each reached base on Charlotte errors in the inning. Smithlin would later score on an infield groundout. Wright would score on a wild pitch.
Penn State increased their lead to 5-2 when Chris Netwall connected on a one-out solo home run over the left field wall.
Penn State would score a runs in the seventh and eight inning to make the final score 7-2.
Penn State starter Peter Yodis threw five innings to earn his first win of the season. Penn State reliever Dan McCall pitched four scoreless innings for his first save of the season. Charlotte starter John Maine fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
The two teams conclude their two-game series, Sunday, February 18 at 1 pm.
