CHARLESTON, SC - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team dropped their season opener at the Citadel, 5-0. The game featured a two hour, 14 minute rain delay in the bottom of the third inning.
Charlotte freshman Kris Rochelle connected on the 49ers first extra base hit of the season with a double down the left field line in the eighth inning. Cory Lane, Jamie Rusco and Brian Scafe also each had a hit for the 49ers.
Citadel took an early 1-0 lead when Chip Cannon scored in the second inning on a Charlotte throwing error.
Citadel added two more runs in the third inning on a couple of hits.
The Bulldogs plated their fourth run when Cannon connected on a solo home run over the right field wall in the fifth inning.
The Citadel scored the game's final run when Jon Aughey scored on a Josh Stackley single to right field in the eighth inning.
The 49ers face Siena in a three-game series in their home opener at Phillips Field next weekend, February 21-22. The first two games of the series will be a doubleheader, Saturday, February 21 at 12 pm.
