Buies Creek, N.C. - Senior left hander Spencer Steedley threw a complete game shutout in his second start of the season, striking out a career-high 13 hitters en route to Charlotte's 8-0 baseball win at Campbell University's Taylor Field on Saturday afternoon.
Twin brothers Chris Lane and Cory Lane had three hits each, while junior right fielder Chris Taylor hit his first home run of the season, a two-run blast in the fifth inning, as Charlotte cruised to the road victory.
Steedley had at least one strikeout in every inning, and kept Campbell from advancing any runners to third base. Timely defensive excellence also preserved the shutout, as the 49ers did not commit an error for the first time in four games this season.
Taylor and senior catcher Kris Rochelle had two hits each for Charlotte, which has piled on double-digit hits in each of its last three ballgames. Rochelle has recorded double-digit putouts in the previous two games. The Niners struck out 15 hitters in the other game of the series against Campbell, giving the Charlotte pitching staff 28 batters fanned in two games against the Fighting Camels in their opening series of the season.
Charlotte improves to 3-1 this season, while Campbell drops to 0-2.
Campbell starter Quinn LeSage lasted six innings, yielding seven hits and a pair of walks, and striking out three. Five of the eight runs were charged to him and all were earned. After a combined nine errors between the two teams on Friday, neither team committed a defensive gaffe, making all of the Charlotte runs earned.
Chris England allowed three runs in the ninth on five hits. He struck out two Niners.
