Buies Creek, N.C. - Senior right hander Adam Mills tied a career high with 12 strikeouts, including the last ten batters he faced, to pick up his first victory of the season as the Charlotte 49ers defeated Campbell University 15-6 in college baseball action from Taylor Field Friday afternoon. Charlotte improves to 2-1, while the Fighting Camels drop their opener and start 0-1.
First baseman Alex Burt had five hits, including a two-run homer, his first of the 2007 season, and four RBI. Junior left fielder Brad McElroy also had four RBI on a grand slam in the fourth inning. He finished 3-for-6, including that first home run of his season.
The teams combined for nine errors in the game. Campbell put up five runs in the first, thanks to five hits off of Mills and three Niners errors. Charlotte responded with four runs in the second and took the lead for good with the Burt blast in the third. Campbell starter Blake Herring started off the fourth by walking the bases loaded, mixing in an out on a sacrifice bunt before McElroy deposited the blast to left field to give Charlotte a 10-5 edge. Herring left the game after 3.2 innings and took the loss (0-1).
Campbell responded with an unearned run in the fourth on two more Charlotte errors before Mills went on a pitching tear. Beginning with the third out of the fourth, he struck out the side for the next three innings to put together a string of ten in a row, beginning and ending with second baseman Zach Johnson. Mills was on a pitch count and was lifted with the streak in tact after seven innings. His final line saw him scatter seven hits and a walk in his outing, earning three of the six runs scored against him. He was rewarded with his first win of the season (1-0).
Mills passed former Niner and current major leaguer John Maine on the all-time career innings pitched list. His seven innings gave him 280.0 and puts him in sixth place on the list. He is now 19.1 innings behind Zach Treadway for fourth place in Niners history.
