CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team behind four runs in their final two at-bats notch their first win of the season, 5-4, over Gardner-Webb. With the win, Charlotte improved to 1-1 on the season.
The 49ers scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning when Randall Poplin scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Gardner-Webb relief pitcher Andrew Martin.
Charlotte's Alex Derhak paced the 49ers with two hits and four RBI. Thomas Bowker also had two hits for the 49ers.
Samy Styers and Ryan Quirello each had two hits for Gardner-Webb.
Gardner-Webb scored the game's first run when Sam Bradford connected on a single to left field scoring Samy Styers in the first inning.
Charlotte tied the score at 1-1 when Jamie Rusco scored on Alex Derhak's single in the second inning.
Gardner-Webb regained the lead, 3-1, with two runs on two hits in the seventh inning. Ryan Quirello began the inning with a home run over the left center field wall. Then, Matt Higginson scored the inning's other run on a single to left field by Jonathan McKoy.
The 49ers took their first lead of the game, 4-3, when Derhak connected on a one-out three-run home run over the left field wall in the eighth inning.
Gardner-Webb tied the game at 4-4 when Styers scored on a Charlotte fielding error in the eighth inning.
Charlotte reliever Justin Brown collected his first win of the season after only one hit and one unearned run in two innings.
The 49ers hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to in-state foe Elon, Tuesday, February 11 at 2:30.
