ROUND ROCK, Texas - Charlotte fell to Southwest Texas, 7-6, in the first game of the Round Rock Express Tournament.
Charlotte took an early 2-0 lead when Thomas Bowker connected on a two-run home run over the right field wall with one out in the second inning. Charlotte added another run in the inning when Derek Dixon scored on a Nick Blackmon single to left centerfield.
Southwest Texas State took a 4-3 lead with four runs in the fourth inning. The big blow of the inning was a two-run single to leftfield by Louie Carmona.
Southwest Texas increased their lead to 6-3 with two runs in fifth inning.
Charlotte cut the deficit to 6-4 when Alex Derhak led off the sixth inning with a single to rightfield. He would later score on a Dixon sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Charlotte cut the Southwest Texas lead to 6-5 with one run in the eighth inning. Mike Taylor reached first on a walk with two outs in the inning. Then, he would later score on a Southwest Texas fielding error.
Southwest Texas scored a run in the eighth inning to increase their lead to 7-5.
Charlotte cut the Southwest Texas lead to 7-6 when Derhak walked with the bases loaded scoring Nick Blackmon in the ninth inning. Then, Charlotte lined into a game ending double play with the bases loaded.
Southwest Texas reliever Bobby Sawicki earned his first win of the season after pitching five innings of relief. Charlotte starter Pat Gambale fell to 0-2 on the season with the loss. Southwest Texas closer Chad Massengale recorded his second save of the season.
Charlotte will face Texas Christian in their second game of the Round Rock Express Tournament, Saturday, February 10 at 7 pm.
