CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte 49ers baseball team's ninth inning rally was not enough as they lost their season opener, 12-8, to Gardner-Webb in 11 innings.
Brian Scafe lead the 49ers with two hits including a three-run home run in the fourth inning which tied the score, 4-4. Randall Poplin also had two hits including his two-run single in the ninth inning which tied the score, 8-8.
Charlotte trailed 8-4 entering the bottom of the ninth inning. The 49ers scored four runs in the inning to tie the score at 8-8 and sending the game into extra innings. Scafe, who had reached base on a single to center field, scored the inning's first run on a Gardner-Webb wild pitch. Then, Thomas Bowker, who had reached base on an error, scored the second run of the inning on George Sandel's infield single. Then, Poplin connected on a two-run single to left field that scored Brad Lamm and Sandel tying the score, 8-8.
Gardner-Webb scored four runs on four hits in the eleventh inning taking the lead for good, 12-8. Samy Styers scored the game-winning run on a David Futrelle single to right field. Sam Bradford, Futrelle and Jim Glueckert scored the other three runs in the inning.
The two-teams conclude their two-game series, Sunday, February 9 at 1 pm at Tom and Lib Phillips Field.
