Track & Field Signs Four In Early Period

The 49ers have inked a pair of men and a pair of women to run in distance events next season.

Dec. 19, 2003

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers track and field program has signed four recruits to national letters of intent during the early signing period, head coach Robert Olesen announced today. All four will compete in distance events and will join the team as freshmen for the 2004-05 school year.

The first signee, Summer Graham, was one of the top distance runners in North Carolina this past season. A five-time all-state honoree, she has been the runner-up at the state 1-A cross country meet the past two years for Princeton High School. She is a seven-time conference champion and has won the regional championship four times.

"We are thrilled to have Summer join us for the fall of 2004," cross country coach Brad Herbster said. "She can make an immediate impact in our distance program and will help add depth. Summer is not afraid to race up front and will challenge for the lead."

Shannon Miley joins the 49ers from Melbourne, Fla. She has been named all-state six times and has earned numerous all-conference honors. She owns personal bests in the 800 of 2:23, 1600 of 5:14, 3200m of 11:52 and 5,000 of 19:09.

"Shannon has solid times coming out of Satellite Beach High School," Herbster said. "She can come in and challenge for a top five spot from day one."

Matt Hipps, one of the top distance runners in North Carolina from New Bern High School, will be a freshman for Charlotte's men next fall. He is a two-time all-state performer. This past fall, he placed ninth at the state cross country meet. For track, he was sixth in the state for the 3,200 meters. He has earned all-region honors three times and all-conference notice four times.

"Matt is very competitive and very consistent," Herbster said. "He will help our team right away in the distance events. He has very good strength."

Kyle Riggins joins the Charlotte cross country/track and field program from North Mecklenburg High School, just north of Charlotte. He has been named all-region three times and all-conference five times. He was a top-seven performer for the nationally-ranked North Mecklenburg cross country team that was tabbed third in the country by Harrier Magazine in 2000 and 2001. North Mecklenburg won the state cross country team title both years.

"Kyle has the speed and strength to impact our program at once," Herbster said.

The 49ers opened the 2004 indoor season earlier this month at Clemson. They will return to action, Jan. 17, when they travel compete at the Tar Heel Fast Times Meet. The outdoor season begins March 18 with the 49ers Classic.
