Cross Country Teams Competing For C-USA Crown Saturday

The men are the defending league champs, while the women will look for their first title since 1994.

Oct. 31, 2003

TAMPA, Fla. - The Charlotte 49ers cross country teams return to action this weekend as they travel to USF for the Conference USA Championships. The men enter as the defending conference champs, while the women seek their first league title since 1994.

The C-USA Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships will be held this Saturday, Nov. 1 at the USF Golf Course in Tampa, Fla. The men's 8K race will begin at 8:30 a.m. and includes the 12 men's programs (all except Southern Miss and UAB). The 6K women's competition begins at 9:30 a.m. and will include competitors from all 14 C-USA schools.

The women enter the weekend having won their last two meets. The last time they won a league championship was 1994, when they were in the Metro Conference. That season, the 49ers had runners finish third, fourth, fifth and sixth. Cassie Ficken figures to be the top finisher this time around, earning C-USA Performer of the Week honors earlier this fall.

Russell Slade is expected to pace Charlotte's men. A co-captain in his first season on the team, he has been the first member of the 49ers to cross the line in three of his four meets. Although the team lost three all-conference runners from a year ago, the Niners have finished in the top half of the field in each of their meets this season.

Next up for Charlotte is the NCAA Southeast Regionals. That meet will be held Nov. 15 at East Carolina.
