Cross Country Teams Ready for C-USA Championships

Charlotte commences title chase at 10:30 am on Saturday.

Oct. 28, 2004

Chicago - The Charlotte 49ers men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the Conference USA Championships this Saturday, October 30. The championships this year are hosted by DePaul University, and will be run at Palos Hills Forest Preserve (Bullfrog Lake) in Chicago. The Charlotte women will compete in the 6K championship race at 10:30 am, followed one hour later by the men's 8K championship.

Head coach Brad Herbster thinks that the 49ers will be able to compete on both sides. "The men's race will be a very competitive race upfront. There are five teams that can win this race on any given day," Herbster said. "Our women can have success placing high in the conference and bringing home a couple of All-Conference awards."

Racing for the 49ers men's team are senior Ed Schlichter, junior Jamil Muhaimin, sophomores Ken Simeone and Russell Slade, and true freshmen Matt Hipps, Ryan Jank and Nick Sunseri.

This season, Schlichter has been the 49ers top runner in each race. Most recently, he paced the men's team at the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, IN, where he was followed four seconds later by freshman Sunseri. The men's race features 12 schools.

Racing on the women's side are junior Jane Daniels, sophomores Tsehaye Dagnachew, Amelia Slagle, and Candace Hitchcock, and true freshmen Ciara Delgado and Summer Graham.

The women's race will feature all 14 C-USA schools, including 30th-ranked Marquette. Daniels and Dagnachew have led the women's team in every race this season, with Daniels taking the lead three times and Dagnachew twice. Daniels was chosen C-USA Female Athlete of the Week on September 28, the only honoree for the 49ers this season.

Following the conference championships, two meets remain in 2004. The NCAA Southeast Region Championships will be held November 13 in Greenville, NC. The NCAA Championships will take place Monday, November 22 in Terre Haute, IN, on the same course that the 49ers got to test out during the Pre-Nationals race a few weeks ago.
