Women's Cross Country Ranked 10th Regionally

The ranking matches the second-best ranking in school history and the highest for the 49ers since 1999.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Charlotte 49ers women's cross country team is ranked 10th in this week's Division I Southeast Region Poll, released Monday. The ranking matches the second-best ranking in school history and the highest for the 49ers since 1999.

"Our women have really come together as a team in a short period of time," cross country coach Brad Herbster said. "With Cassie's leadership, the hardwork of our sophomores and the addition of some new athletes, the team has a really good opportunity to race well at conference and region. There's a strong chance we could have some athletes qualify for NCAAs."

In 1999, Charlotte finished the year ranked 10th in the region. The 49ers' highest ranking ever was ninth in 1994 after the team captured its third straight Metro Conference title.

The 49ers returned to the top 10 on the strength of last weekend's performance at Furman. Charlotte won the Furman Invitational with a score of 38 points. Junior Cassie Ficken finished first overall as the 49ers placed five in the top 15.

This weekend, the team competes at East Carolina's North Carolina Collegiate.
