Sept. 28, 2006

Charlotte, N.C. - The men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Washington, D.C. for the George Mason Invitational on Saturday as the women's 6k race starts at 10 am, while the men's 8k follows at 10:45am.

Charlotte will compete against 17 other teams, including: American, Campbell, Coppin State, Dunbar, Elon, George Mason, Hagerstown, Howard, Indiana, Maryland, UMES, Morgan State, Navy, Richmond, St.John's, UMBC, UNC Greensboro and UNC Wilmington.

The race will be held at the Bull Run Park in Manassas, VA. This is the first time the 49ers have competed at the George Mason Invitational

Men's Race

Teams participating in the men's race include: American, Campbell, Coppin State, Elon, George Mason, Hagerstown, Howard, Indiana, Maryland, UMES, Morgan State, Navy, Richmond, UMBC, UNC Greensboro, and UNC Wilmington.

Indiana is a perennial participant in the NCAA Chmpionship meet and the clear favorite this weekend.

Competing this Saturday will be senior Ken Simeone, juniors Ryan Jank and Matt Hipps, sophomore Adu Dentamo and freshmen Chase Eckard, Jordan Olsen, James Maneval, Travis Brotherton, Aaron Kauffman, Alan Ford, Jordan Rickard and Isaiah Shirlen.

"We are obviously going up with a commitment as a team to improve upon what we did in Winthrop two weeks ago," said Charlotte head cross country coach Brad Herbster.

"We are working on getting our top five guys to work more as a unit, rather than as five individuals. We want to see how well we stack up against a strong field of runners on Saturday. Our goal is to go up to DC and compete and work together and try to break into the Southeast Region top 10 after this weekend."

Women's Race

Teams participating in the women's race include - American, Campbell,, Dunbar, Elon, George Mason, Hagerstown, Howard, Maryland, UMES, Morgan State, Navy, Richmond, St.John's, UMBC, UNCG, and UNCW.

Heading to the nation's capital this Saturday will be seniors Jane Daniels, Tsehaye Dagnachew, and Amelia Slagle, sophomores Erin Macauley, Aja Jackson, Stephanie Snyder and Jess Schlegel and freshmen Noelle Horelik, Lindsay Warfield, Justine Thompson and Aly Younce

"What we want to do with the women's program is expand on the teamwork that Jane and Aja had going two weeks ago." said Herbster.

"We have a young group of runners behind them that need experience, but are gaining a greater understanding of how much they can impact the team by running as a pack, rather then as an individual."

The women will face major competition from Richmond (ranked 8th in the region) and Maryland ranked (7th in the Mid Atlantic Region).
