Jane Daniels Chosen C-USA Cross Country Female Athlete of the Week

Led Charlotte to the team title at the Winthrop Invitational.

Sept. 28, 2004

Charlotte, NC - Charlotte, NC -- Charlotte's Jane Daniels (Oostburg, Wisconsin/Oostburg HS) has been chosen as Conference USA's Cross Country Female Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced today.

Daniels finished fourth overall to lead the 49ers to the team title at the Asics/Winthrop University Invitational at Winthrop Farm on Saturday, September 25. She paced the Niners in a tough 5,000-meter field, finishing with a season-best time of 18:07.

Charlotte edged out Appalachian State in the team standings, 52 to 57, to earn the women's University/Garnett division championship. The women's field consisted of 84 runners from eight Division I teams.

This is the first C-USA Athlete of the Week honor for Daniels, who transferred to Charlotte from Bradley University.

"Jane and Tsehaye (Dagnachew) worked well together throughout that race," said head coach Brad Herbster, "and I'm excited for Jane because she really ran well on Saturday. She did a great job, led the team, and it's important for her to gain this experience running up front in a race. We'll need that during the Conference USA championships and the national-level races we have coming up, including this weekend."

Charlotte's cross country teams compete this weekend at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, NC. The Niners women's team will be one of 23 squads competing in the heavily-contested Nike Race of Champions, which features some of the top cross country programs in the country.
