Lowery Nabs Second Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Honors as Both Men's and Women's Teams Ranked in Regional Poll

Freshman Finished Second at First Annual Charlotte Invitational

Sept. 24, 2007

Charlotte, N.C. - After placing third overall in last weekend's First Annual Charlotte Invitational, freshman Dakota Lowery of the Charlotte 49ers men's cross country team was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, marking the second time Lowery has received conference rookie honors.  His performance, coupled with the strong output of the remainder of the men's and women's teams, earned Charlotte regional ranking by the U.S. Track & Field Association poll Monday.

Lowery was the second place finisher for the 49ers in the race behind sophomore Chase Eckard, completing the 8K course in 26:39.0. With the finish, he has finished in the top three in all intercollegiate races in which he has competed (Gamecock Invitational, 1st overall; Eye Opener Division I, 2nd overall). Additionally, he has served as an anchor for a Charlotte team which has posted perfect scores in all meets this season.

In the southeast region of USTFA poll, the Charlotte men's team was ranked 14th, while the women's team was ranked 10th.

"It's a solid way to start out the regional ranking," head coach Brad Herbster said.

The 49ers return to action this weekend at the George Mason Invitational in Washington, D.C.
