Cross Country Prepares for Winthrop Meet

49ers Working to get Times Down Through 2006 Schedule

Sept. 14, 2006

Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers Cross Country teams will travel to the Winthrop Invitational Saturday in Rock Hill, SC. The men will race 8,000 meters at 9:30 a.m. and the women will run 5,000 meters at 10:15 a.m. The field includes College of Charleston, Davidson, Elon, Furman, UNCG, South Carolina (B), Warren Wilson College and Winthrop. Admission to the event is free.

The Charlotte cross country teams opened the season two weeks ago with a win at the Charlotte Relay on the women's side and a second place finish on the men's side. The race was run in relay format, with two person teams competing by each runner taking half of the race. This weekend's format is more traditional and head coach Brad Herbster is looking to get a better read on the times of his runners on an individual basis.

"We are excited to compete at Rock Hill this weekend," said Herbster. "It is one of two meets located in the Carolinas on our 2006 schedule and it will allow our fans to attend. It will be fun to see everyone in action and to evaluate the entire team as we move forward into the 2006 season."

The women were led two weeks ago by the team of Stephanie Snyder (11:05) and Aja Jackson (10:39). Jane Daniels and Tsehaye Dagnachew both trained through the meet but did not compete. The women won easily over UNCG and Virginia Intermont. The men placed second behind NAIA national champion Virginia Intermont, but outdistanced Davidson, UNC Greensboro and UNC Asheville in the relay format. The top team for the forty-niners was junior Matt Hipps (15:26) and freshmen Aaron Kauffman (15:43), which placed third overall.
