Cross Country Opens Season With Charlotte Relay This Saturday

Following a pair of high school races, the women get underway at 9:45 with the men set to follow at 10:30 from McAlpine Park.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers' cross country teams begin their seasons Saturday, hosting the Charlotte Relay Invitational. Following a pair of high school races, the women get underway at 9:45 with the men set to follow at 10:30.

Eight schools will compete in the women's race, including Clemson, Maryland and South Carolina. Six of those will field teams in the men's race with the exception of Clemson and South Carolina.

The 2003 season will be the second for the 49ers under cross country coach Brad Herbster. Last season, the men claimed their first Conference USA title, earning Herbster C-USA Coach of the Year Honors. The women finished sixth at the league championships, a jump of five spots in the standings from the previous season.
