CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The men's and women's cross country MVP awards, along with the men's Vincent Vernitsky Award, were presented at the Charlotte 49ers Annual All Sports Banquet. Jamil Muhaimin was named the MVP for the men, while Cassie Ficken was tabbed MVP for the women.
Muhaimin, a sophomore, received the men's MVP award as the 49ers' top finisher at the C-USA Championships. He also led Charlotte at the NCAA Southeast Regionals with a time of 32:38.0 for the 10,000-meter course. As a freshman, Muhaimin helped his team capture its first ever Conference USA title.
Ficken, a junior, was named the women's MVP for a school record third-straight year. Last season, she finished ninth at the Conference USA Championships and earned All-Conference USA honors for the second-straight year. She also led her team to a 10th-place ranking in the Division I Southeast Regional Poll, which was the highest ranking for the 49ers since 1999.
Senior Ed Schlichter received the men's Vincent Vernitsky Award, which is presented annually to the cross country/track and field athlete that best exhibits a joy for his sport and a desire to share that passion with others. Schlichter redshirted last season and was not able to compete. As a junior, Schlichter earned All-Conference USA honors with a fifth-place finish at the Conference USA Championships.
