CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte cross country / track and field coach Robert Olesen announced today that Ryan Jank, Nick Sunseri and Jenna Konhke have signed letters of intent to compete for the 49ers this fall. All three will join the program as freshmen.
"Nick, Ryan and Jenna will immediately add depth to our teams, along with the kids we signed earlier," Olesen said. "At the same time, I'm confident they'll come in and compete for a spot in our lineup this fall."
A Spartanburg, S.C., native, Jank had his best cross country performance at the 2003 Coaches Classic, finishing the event with a time of 15:50.78. Competing for Dorman High School in Spartanburg, he recorded South Carolina's fastest time of the year for a 3,200-meter event with a time of 9:22.33 to place second at the national caliber Taco Bell Classic. He also ran a 1,600-meter event in 4:24.
"Ryan's strength and speed is a huge asset to our team," cross country coach Brad Herbster said. "He can come in and challenge for a spot in our top five out of the gate."
Sunseri comes from Raleigh, N.C., where he helped Cardinal Gibbons High School to cross country state championships three years in a row. He finished among the top three at the championships each of those seasons. He owns personal records of 15:40 for a cross country event, 4:28 for the 1,600-meter run and 9:30 in the 3,200-meter run.
"Nick is coming to Charlotte from a great cross country program at Cardinal Gibbons," Herbster said. "He has great strength and is a fierce competitor. We look forward to having Nick join our program and impacting our team in a positive way."
Kohnke joins Charlotte from Santa Margarita High School in Dana Point, Calif.
"Jenna will be a key component in helping us develop depth on our women's team," said Herbster. "She can come in and push for a top seven spot. She is a very strong competitor with great leadership ability."
These three additions, along with the four signees from the fall, will get their first chance to compete for 49ers this September, when the team hosts the Charlotte Relay, Sept. 4 at McAlpine Park.
