Track & Field's Tim Hall and Brad Herbster Promoted to Associate Head Coach

Assistants have helped 49er track programs to high levels of achievement

May 3, 2005

Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers Athletic Director Judy Rose and Head Track & Field Coach Robert Olesen announced on Tuesday that assistant coaches Tim Hall and Brad Herbster have each been promoted to the position of Associate Head Coach.

Hall is finishing his fifth season with the 49ers track & field program, working with sprint event athletes, while Herbster is in his third season overseeing the 49er distance and cross country programs.

"I'm very happy for Coaches Hall and Herbster," said Head Coach Robert Olesen. "They truly deserve this promotion and recognition for all they've accomplished for the program and department. The way our sport is subdivided and the large number of both male and female student-athletes in the program result in significant decision making responsibility for these primary event area coaches. I feel that the title of Associate Head Coach accurately describes this level of responsibility.

"Tim and Brad have been instrumental in helping us live up to my vision for the program: fielding a team that is well-balanced across the various events of track & field and cross country, being successful at the conference level while advancing individuals to the national level, and providing a positive and memorable collegiate athletic experience to all of our student-athletes."

Both coaches have helped the 49ers track & field and cross country programs achieve an unparalleled level of success during their respective tenures. Their combined efforts during the 2005 indoor season resulted in Charlotte having two All-Americans in the same season for the first time in the school's history.

Tim Hall's area of expertise is working with the team's sprinters, hurdlers and relays. During his tenure, the 49ers have repeatedly rewritten the record books. During the 2005 indoor season, Derrick Johnson captured the Conference USA 60-meter championship and went on to earn Charlotte's first-ever sprint event All-American award in the 60 dash.

In 2005, Charlotte has had an unprecedented number of NCAA Regional qualifiers. During the 2004 outdoor campaign, Hall coached five NCAA East Regional qualifiers, one NCAA National qualifier, and four Junior National qualifiers. The highlight of the season came at the NCAA East Regional, where the men's 4x100 relay of Derrick Johnson, Ben McCallum, Quincy Smith and James Hanna received All-Region honors while posting a school record-breaking performance. Derrick Johnson also received All-Region honors in the 100 and 200 meters, qualifying for the NCAA National Championships in both events.

Newcomers to the team boasted an impressive season as well. Shareese Woods, Tempess Stark, James Hanna, and Montray Gilchrest were all freshmen who qualified and participated in the Junior National meet in College Station, Texas. Hall's athletes have also achieved success outside collegiate competition. Sprinter Koiyan Morlu competed for his home country of Liberia at the 2003 World Championships, 2001 World Championships, and the 2000 Olympics in Sydney (4x100 relay).

Brad Herbster coaches the 49ers in distance events, and in the fall oversees the cross country teams. Herbster helped to guide redshirt junior Cassie Ficken, who this winter became Charlotte's first-ever distance indoor All-American and was chosen as the program's first-ever Conference USA Female Athlete of the Year.

In 2002, his first year with the cross country teams, the men won their first ever Conference USA championship. The men's team earned a runner-up finish in 2004. For his efforts in 2002, Herbster earned C-USA Coach of the Year honors. The women have shown similar improvement under his direction. In 2003, they finished fourth at the league championships, matching their best showing since 1997. Charlotte placed two female runners on the women's All-Conference USA team this fall.

In addition to impressive team performances, Herbster has guided a number of individuals to success. At the most recent cross country conference championship, five runners earned All-Conference USA honors. Top men's finisher Ed Schlichter earned All-NCAA Southeast Region honors as well as a share of the Conference USA Male Cross Country Athlete of the Year award. Freshman Nick Sunseri became the first athlete in Charlotte history to qualify for the World Cross Country Junior Championships. Verun Tahiliani and Alex Stewart earned USA Track & Field Junior All-American status in 2004.
