Houston - Charlotte 49ers cross country/track & field assistant coach Ed Schlichter will be competing in the USA Half Marathon Championship on Sunday, January 15 in Houston.
The Championships will be held in conjunction with the Aramco Half Marathon and Chevron Houston Marathon. The event attracted a heady group of competitors with the title of national half marathon champion and $51,200 in prize money up for grabs. The event is sanctioned by USA Track & Field, the sport's governing body in the U.S.
Schlichter has been training for marathons and half marathons since graduating last May, while serving as assistant coach for the 49ers cross country and track & field teams. Ed was the Conference USA Male Co-Athlete of the Year last cross country season, earning All-Southeast Region honors in his final collegiate cross country race.
According to its web site, the Chevron Houston Marathon is one of the nation's premier winter marathons and attracts some 20,000 runners annually. It offers the only closed marathon course in Texas and is ranked among the top five in the nation by the Ultimate Guide to Marathons for fastest course, organization, and crowd support.
