Greenville, NC - The Charlotte men's cross country team finished eighth out of 29 teams overall, paced by senior Ed Schlichter's 21st-place finish, at the 2004 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships at ECU's Lake Kristi in Greenville, NC. The 49er women's team finished 13th of 25 teams, led by Jane Daniels and Tsehaye Dagnachew finishing back-to-back in 42nd and 43rd.
Schlichter, competing in his first 10,000-meter race of the season, ran 30:59.1 to earn All-Southeast Region honors. He beat out Nurani Sheikh of Louisville by 1.2 seconds to finish in 21st place overall. Running head-to-head for the second straight race, Schlichter reversed the results from the Conference USA Championships, when Sheikh was fourth overall to Schlichter's ninth-place showing.
Schlichter's time was the fourth-fastest in school history for a 10K course, and was the second time Schlichter put his name among Charlotte's all-time top 10.
True freshman Nick Sunseri finished 36th overall, in a time of 31:21.3, and was the seventh freshman to cross the line in the race. Jamil Muhaimin was the third Charlotte finisher, hitting the tape in 31:44.9 to capture 46th place. The pair, along with Schlichter, were also the top three finishers for Charlotte at the C-USA Championships, each earning all-conference honors.
Ken Simeone finished 63rd overall (32:03.3), while freshman Matt Hipps was 77th (32:14.6). Sophomore Russell Slade ran a time of 32:56.8 to finish 115th, and freshman Ryan Jank was 165th in a time of 34:18.0.
Charlotte was eighth in the team competition, scoring 239 points to finish four points ahead of Wake Forest. The top two teams, NC State and William & Mary, automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships, to be held Monday, Nov. 22 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN.
On the women's side, Daniels was 42nd with a time of 21:30.6 in the 6,000-meter race, while Dagnachew followed closely in 21:35.2. Daniels' time was the third-fastest in Charlotte history for a 6K, just three-tenths of a second behind the second-best performance ever. Dagnachew's time places her fifth on the all-time list.
