TAMPA, Fla. - Neither race went quite as expected for the Charlotte 49ers cross country teams at the Conference USA Championships, Saturday morning. The women, who were ranked regionally earlier this season, tied for fourth with UAB, while the men finished 12th. Marquette captured both the women's and men's league titles.
Ranked nationally, the Golden Eagles dominated the women's race, scoring 43 points with five runners in the top 15. The 49ers finished with 151 points, led by Cassie Ficken in ninth place. After Ficken, Tsehaye Dagnachew was the next Charlotte runner to cross the line. She placed 23rd with a time of 22:33.70. Andria Craig was one spot and two seconds back, placing 24th with a time of 22:35.90. Klara Jarolimova was the 49ers' fourth runner, finishing 46th with a time of 23:30.80. Amelia Slagle was 49th to close out the team's scoring effort.
Marquette also posted a score of 43 in the men's race, less than half the point total of runner-up Cincinnati (88). Charlotte finished with 277 points. Jamil Muhaimin was the lead runner for the Niners. He placed 36th with a 26:35.50 time. Mark Weems was 54th with a 27:18.60. Andrew Manning was 60th with a 27:32.70, while Russell Slade finished 61st. He turned in a time of 27:36.10. Ken Simeone rounded out the team's score as the fifth runner, logging a time of 27:57.90 to place 66th.
Both teams will take next weekend off before returning to the course, Nov. 15 at the NCAA Regional Championships.
