Chicago - The Charlotte men finished in second place overall at the 10th annual Conference USA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Palos Hills Forest Preserve in Palos Hills, Ill. Charlotte's women's team finished seventh, as three men and two women were named to the All-Conference teams.
Marquette and Houston took the women's and men's team competitions, respectively. Memphis' Mate Nemeth garnered medalist honors in the men's 8K competition. Houston, which was fifth last season, won its first-ever team championship by edging out Charlotte by just six points (73-79).
The 49ers made the league's best turnaround, jumping ten spots after finishing 12th last season. Senior Ed Schlichter earned second-team all-conference honors, finishing ninth overall in a time of 25:14. It was the second time that Schlichter has earned a place on the all-conference team. He finished fifth overall, good for first-team recognition, at the 2002 Championship.
True freshman Nick Sunseri, who finished 13th, and junior Jamil Muhaimin (15th) each earned third-team all-conference recognition. Sunseri was clocked in 25:26, finishing one second ahead of East Carolina's Matt Hanlon. Muhaimin followed just a second later in 25:28. They were part of a six-runner pack which finished 10th through 15th and were separated by just four seconds overall.
The Charlotte women earned seventh overall, led by sophomore Tsehaye Dagnachew's tenth place finish. The second team all-conference award winner led the team for the third time this season, finishing the 6k course in 22:07. As in the men's race, Dagnachew finished in a tight pack of six runners.
Junior Jane Daniels was named to the all-conference third team after posting a 15th-place finish with a time of 22:19. It was the first time since 2000, and only the third time overall, that two Charlotte women have earned all-conference awards in the same year.
Marquette, recently ranked 30th in the nation, defended their women's team championship by winning their fifth straight title and seventh of the 10 C-USA championships in league history. TCU's Mary Kinyanjui won the women's 6K for the second straight year.
