LAKE KRISTI, N.C. - Led by top-10 finishes from Kenneth Svendsen and Vince Sherry, the Charlotte 49ers men's cross country team finished fourth at the Conference USA Championships Saturday morning at East Carolina. The women's team also competed Saturday, placing 11th with freshman Cassie Ficken scoring first for the Niners in 27th.

Tulane won the men's title scoring 61 points. TCU's Eluid Njubi won for the men individually with a time of 23:09.3 on the 8K course. Marquette won the championship on the women's side with a score of 46 points. Again, a TCU runner won as an individual with Gladys Keitany finished the 6K course first with a time of 19:44.5.

Svendsen and Sherry earned All-Conference USA honors for the men along with Ian Dickinson, who was 14th. Svendsen's time of 23:55.7 broke his own school record . Sherry was right on his heels, just one-tenth of a second behind, with a 23:55.8 time. Dickinson ran a 24:26.5. Josh Baker finished fourth for the 49ers with a time of 25:11.1 to place 32nd. Mike Ryan capped the Niners scoring in 35th with a 25:13.9 time.

Ficken led the women's team with a time of 21:31.6. Laura Syracuse was second for Charlotte with a time of 21:51.1 to place 36th. Lisa Ottens was next for the 49ers, placing 67th with a 22:58.4 time. Claire Shepherd was 77th with a time of 23:20.8, while Sarah Carter capped the Niners score in 89th with a 24:35.9 time.
