Terre Haute, Ind. - The Charlotte men's cross country team finished 30th in the 8,000-meter White Race, while the 49er women were 33rd in the 6k Blue Race, at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals on Saturday.
The meet featured some of the nation's best cross country teams, competing on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course, where the NCAA Championships will be held later this season.
Jane Daniels, in her first season running for Charlotte, led the women's team with a 67-place finish in a 252-runner field. Daniels crossed the line in a time of 21:53.2 in the first 6,000-meter race of the season. Tsehaye Dagnachew was second on the Niner team and 87th overall, finishing in 22:06.4. Daniels and Dagnachew have finished one-two for the Niners in every race so far this season. Liz Smith (214), Andria Craig (223) and Amelia Slagle (224) rounded out the team scoring for Charlotte.
Ed Schlichter was the top Niner finisher for the men, placing 120th overall in a field of 242 runners. Schlichter ran 25:29.2, finishing four seconds ahead of teammate Nick Sunseri (25:33.3). Sunseri, a freshman, finished 128th overall and bettered his previous season-best by 11 seconds. Jamil Muhaimin (157th), Matt Hipps (175th) and Russell Slade (196th) also scored for Charlotte.
The Charlotte men beat out five teams in the 35-squad field. No. 2 Stanford took the championship, followed by No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 5 Michigan, No. 14 BYU and No. 18 Florida State. In all, the field featured 12 teams ranked in the top 30 nationally in the USCCCA/Mondo NCAA cross country poll. Seven other teams were rated just outside the top 30, listed as receiving votes.
Charlotte is ranked 13th among men's teams in the Southeast Region, according to the latest USCCCA/Mondo poll.
The Charlotte women's team finished ahead of four teams, while Stanford ran away with the title. The women's Blue field featured 14 teams ranked among the top-30 nationally, according to the Finish Lynx/Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association Division I poll, while two others were receiving votes. Four of the nation's top 10 were in attendance, including No. 1 Stanford, No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 8 North Carolina and No. 10 Missouri.
