GREENVILLE, S.C. - Led by race winner Cassie Ficken, the Charlotte 49ers women's cross country team won the Furman Invitational this past weekend, beating out 14 other schools. The men's team placed fourth out of 16 schools.
Ficken paced Charlotte with a time 18:40.59. Her win helped the team finish with a score 38 points, seven better than runner-up UNC Asheville. Prior to the meet, UNC Asheville was ranked ninth in the Southeast Region. Ficken was joined in the top 10 by a pair of teammates. Tsehaye Dagnachew finished fourth with a time of 18:55.47. Andria Craig's time of 19:15.71 was good for eighth. Amelia Slagle placed just outside the top 10, in 11th with a 19:18.80 time. Liz Smith closed out the team's scoring effort. She was 14th with a time of 19:35.44. Klara Jarolimova and Marenika Wisdom also compted for Charlotte, placing 22nd and 24th, respectively.
Andrew Manning powered the men's team with a 15th-place finish. The team went on to score 95 points, 10 behind third-place finisher, East Tennessee State. Jamil Muhaimin was the second runner across the line for the 49ers. He placed 21st with a time of 27:09.29. Russell Slade, still battling the effects of a spider bite, was 26th with a time of 27:27.11. Mark Weems finished one spot back in 27th with a 27:27.52 time. Ken Simeone was fifth for Charlotte and 39th overall with a time of 27:41.77. Alex Stewart and Verun Tachini also competed for Charlotte, placing 41st and 53rd.
The Niners return to action next weekend, when they compete at East Carolina in the North Carolina Collegiate.
