Bethlehem, Pa. - Senior Cassie Ficken finished ninth in a 310-woman field to head the Charlotte 49ers efforts at the 2005 Brooks Paul Short Run on Saturday. The 32nd running of Lehigh's race on the Goodman Campus featured over 40 teams on both the men's and women's sides.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Senior Cassie Ficken finished the 310-runner Collegiate Invitational in ninth place overall. It was her first 6K race of the season, and she finished in a time of 20:45.3.

She was the top finisher from the six A-10 teams in attendance, beating out La Salle's Rachel Papin by seven seconds.

Ficken was in a tight pack of runners at the finish, with just four seconds separating her from the fourth-place finisher. She helped Charlotte to a 14th-place finish in a 47-team field.

No. 20 Columbia captured the women's race, followed by No. 26 Georgetown, No. 15 Tennessee, Maryland, Cornell and No. 8 Villanova. La Salle, Penn, Stony Brook, and Bucknell rounded out the top ten.

Cal, Davidson, and Richmond finished 11th through 13th, followed by Charlotte. The 49ers finished ahead of 33 other teams, including A-10 foes Saint Joseph's, Massachusetts, and George Washington.

Junior Tsehaye Dagnachew finished 38th overall in a time of 21:34.1, followed by freshman Aja Jackson (64th, 21:56.0). Also scoring for the Niners were freshmen Liana Blue (167th) and Stephanie Snyder (203rd).

MEN'S RECAP
In the men's 8K Collegiate Invitational, Charlotte was 15th overall in a 44-team field. No. 12 Georgetown took the title, its third in a row at the event, and was followed by La Salle, Princeton, Auburn, and Columbia (RV). Duquesne, Penn, Penn State, Lehigh and Villanova (RV) rounded out the top 10.

 

 

Appalachian, Army, Haverford and Wayne State finished 11th through 14th, followed by Charlotte. The Niners beat out A-10 teams Saint Joseph's, Richmond, Massachusetts and George Washington. All of the teams ranked ahead of the 49ers were ranked within their respective regions.

Senior Jamil Muhaimin headed the men's team with a 46th-place finish in a time of 24:47. There were 299 runners in the men's field.

Sophomore Nick Sunseri had his best finish of the season, finishing second on the team and 72nd overall in 25:01. He was followed closely by senior Russell Slade (75th, 25:05). Freshman Adu Dentamo was 98th (25:17), and Matt Hipps rounded out the scoring in 119th (25:29).

The 49ers men's and women's teams have just one race remaining before heading to Philadelphia for their first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship races at the end of this month. The teams have next weekend off in preparation for the Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Indiana on Oct. 15. The A-10 Championships will be held on Oct. 29.
