Cary, NC - Ed Schlichter finished 22nd overall, while Tsehaye Dagnachew was 38th on the women's side, as the Charlotte cross country teams competed against nationally-rated competition at the Great American Cross Country Festival at SAS Soccer Park on Friday afternoon.
Schlichter led the men's team to a 13th-place finish among 19 teams in the Nike Race of Champions, finishing in 25:17.65. Matt Hipps was the second Charlotte finisher in the 8k race, at 70th overall, while Ryan Jank, Nick Sunseri and Ryan Slade rounded out the scoring for the 49ers.
Dagnachew finished 38th overall and teammate Jane Daniels took 45th, to lead the Charlotte women's cross country team in the Nike Race of Champions.
Dagnachew crossed the line in 18:15.08, while Daniels ran 18:22.73 for Charlotte. The 49ers women's team finished 12th out of 20 in the team competition, beating out Syracuse, Pittsburgh, South Florida, South Carolina and Alabama, among others.
Amelia Slagle finished 90th overall for Charlotte, which claimed its first victory of the season at last weekend's Asics/Winthrop University Invitational in Rock Hill, SC. Andria Craig (102), Liz Smith (107), Candace Hitchcock (122) and Summer Graham (130) rounded out the scoring for the Niners. In all, 154 women competed in the race.
Underscoring the level of competition, eight of the 11 teams that finished ahead of the 49er women were either ranked among the top 20 teams or were receiving votes in the Finish Lynx/Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association Division I poll. Event champion Duke had been rated 18th, while North Carolina (9th), Georgia (receiving votes) and BYU (3rd) rounded out the event's top four teams. N.C. State was also nationally-ranked (5th), while Virginia, Indiana, and Northern Arizona were all listed as receiving votes.
Michigan, ranked sixth nationally in the latest USCCCA/Mondo NCAA cross country poll, won the men's event, while No. 8 North Carolina State finished second.
