RALEIGH, N.C. - Facing their stiffest competition of the season, the Charlotte 49ers cross country teams returned to action at the Great American Cross Country Festival this past weekend. The women finished 14th overall, beating out New Mexico. The men did not have a team score as only four individuals competed.
Cassie Ficken set the tone for Charlotte's women. Competing in her first meet of the season for the 49ers, she completed the 5,000-meter course with a time of 19:24.4, good for 54th overall. Tsehaye Dagnachew finished six spots back, in 60th with a time of 19:31.1. Liz Smith, a sophomore transfer from UMKC, placed third for the Niners and 70th overall. She posted a time of 20:00.5. Andria Craig was close on her heels in 72n place with a time of 20:03.6. Amelia Slagle closed out the team's scoring effort, placing 80th. Her time was 20:16.2. Klara Jarolimova and Kristin Cook also competed for the 49ers, but finished out of the team's top five.
Andrew Manning paced Charlotte's men. He placed 115th with a time of 28:17.0 for the 8,000-meter course. Jamil Muhaimin was second for the 49ers. He was 137th after crossing the line in 29:10.4. Matt Yost and Alex Stewart also competed for the Niners, placing 151st and 152nd, respectively.
Both team will take next weekend off before returning to action, Oct. 11 at Furman.
