Charlotte Men Win, Women Second at Winthrop Cross Country Meet

Dentamo Wins Men's Race, Dagnachew Three Seconds From Leader in Women's Run

Sept. 16, 2006

Rock Hill, S.C. - The Charlotte men's cross country squad delivered a team victory Saturday as they traveled to Rock Hill, S.C. in the Asics / Winthrop Invitational. The Niners also produced an individual win for sophomore Adu Dentamo (Charlotte, NC). Dentamo claimed the men's race title in a time of 25:44.

Charlotte had eleven runners in the top twenty five en route to the victory. The 49ers scored 36 points to best a field that included fourteen other teams. Dentamo was running his first race of the season. He trailed the leaders early, but made his kick at the four-mile mark to take the lead and cruise to a 20-second victory. Charlotte had a gaggle of runners in a lead pack, with junior Matt Hipps finishing fourth overall with a time of 26:13, freshman Jordan Rickard coming in seventh at 26:20, redshirt freshmen Chase Eckard running eleventh at 26:35 and redshirt freshman Jordan Olsen coming in thirteenth at an even 27:00.

Though their points did not count towards the team total, Charlotte had five more runners in the next six spots.

"Adu looked very effortless in his first collegiate victory," said Charlotte head coach Brad Herbster. "This is our first time back to Winthrop since the course change and it is much more challenging then in previous years. Overall our guys made some tactical mistakes and we will need to improve in those areas to have team success in the upcoming meets."

The Charlotte women finished in second place of 19 teams, led by senior Tsehaye Dagnachew (Jacksonville, NC). Dagnachew finished second overall at 18:26, just three seconds behind the race winner, Brenna Burns of Davidson. Although the Niners had their top five runners in the overall top 20, Davidson won the meet with 27 points, with Charlotte netting 43 points. Jane Daniels placed fifth at 18:50, while Aja Jackson was seventh with a time of 19:07.

"Opportunities were all around us in the race, and we must do a better job of being aggressive," said Herbster.

Rounding out the point scorers for Charlotte was Stephanie Snyder in thirteenth place with a time of 19:41and freshman Lindsay Warfield tied for fifteenth at 19:45.

"We have very good depth on this team, it will be important to workout together in a strong pack in practice and the races, said Herbster.

Charlotte hits the road in two weeks, running at the George Mason Invitational in Washington, D.C.
