WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers cross country teams returned to action Saturday, finishing second at the Wake Forest Alumni Invitational. Vince Sherry, who competed for the first time this season, won the men's race for the 49ers.
Despite Sherry's finish, Wake Forest edged Charlotte on the men's side by 13 points, 23-36. Ed Schlichter was the second runner across the line for the 49ers and seventh overall with a time of 25:52.60. Jared Kessen placed 11th with a time of 26:18.50. He was followed by Mike Ryan and Josh Baker, who finished 17th and 18th, respectively. Ryan had a time of 27:00.80, while Baker ran a 27:01.70.
The women's team didn't score as well as the men's, getting outscored 16-45 by the Demon Deacons. Cassie Ficken broke up Wake's chances at a perfect score, leading the 49ers with a fifth-place finish. She completed the 5,000-meter course with a time of 18:50.00. Laura Syracuse was the Charlotte runner to finish, placing seventh with a 18:55.90 time. Jen Taylor was 10th with a 19:01.50, followed by Jenny Sniffen in 19th. She ran a 20:31.90. Andria Craig capped the Niners' score with a time of 20:44.50 to place 20th.
Next weekend, the women will compete at Winthrop. The men's team will have the weekend off before returning to action Sept. 28 at Great American Cross Country Festival.
