CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers men's and women's cross country teams both won at the season-opening Charlotte Relay Invitational Saturday morning at McAlpine Park. In addition, the 49ers had the winning relay teams in each race.
Charlotte's men won their race with a perfect score of six. Queens finished second with a score of 15. The men were led by Jamil Muhaimin and Luke Pitman, who completed the 2x5K course with a time of 32:47.1. The team of Mike Ryan and Damony Giles was second with a 33:01.2 time. Adam Whitman and Zeke Fleischer capped the scoring with a third-place finish of 34:34.8.
The women's team won their side of the meet with a score of 10, edging South Carolina's runner-up score of 11. Queens placed third with a score of 24. Jen Taylor and Cassie Ficken paced the 49ers, winning with a time of 22:03.1. After the Gamecocks took second, the Niners team of Jenny Sniffen and Laura Syracuse finished third with a 22:39.9 time. South Carolina had teams finish in fourth and fifth, but Charlotte won the meet when Sarah Carter and Marenika Wisdom crossed the line sixth with a time of 24:30.5.
Next weekend, cross country returns to action in Winston-Salem, where they will compete at the Wake Forest Invitational.
