Charlotte, N.C. - Former Charlotte 49ers volleyball standout Christy Ann Galvin, 26, of Charlotte, N.C., died Monday, July 4, 2005.

Galvin, daughter of Michael and Ernestine Galvin, of San Carlos, Calif. is remembered as a vibrant volleyball player who ranks among the all-time leaders in Charlotte volleyball history. Small by most standards for an outside hitter, at 5'9, Galvin was powerful in her play and well-loved by those around her. Described as caring, quiet, and unassuming, the soft-spoke Galvin had a unifying spirit that brought team, coaches and fans together.

A graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Atherton, Calif., she led her team to state volleyball titles in 1996 and 1997. Galvin received her bachelor's degree in International Studies from UNC Charlotte in December of 2001.

She was a four-year starter and letterwinner for the 49ers from 1997-2000. Galvin's standout four-year career as an outside hitter put her near the top of the school's all-time charts in a variety of categories. She is the all-time leader in attack attempts, and as one of the program's best two-way players, still ranks third in both kills (1,564) and digs (1,261). A remarkably consistent player, Galvin played in 471 of a possible 479 games.

She also played for City Beach Volleyball Club in Santa Clara, CA. Galvin possessed an incredible leaping ability that made her a dangerous outside hitter and as history will recall one of the best in Charlotte's history. Teammates called her `The Magician' because of her endless tricks to produce a kill.

Her family remembers her as a strong willed, hard working individual who rarely complained and was quick to assist others. She served as an Assistant Property Manager for Piedmont at Ivy Meadows apartment complex where she also lived. She also assisted with the official scorer's table at Charlotte 49ers volleyball matches. She was active in the team's alumni program and participated in 49ers alumni volleyball matches.

Galvin is survived by her parents, her brother Brendan, and her sister Brianna, who has transferred to Charlotte to play for the 49ers this fall.

The Galvin family wishes to thank the Charlotte community and 49ers family for their undivided support in this time of grief.

The Galvin family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Christy's honor to the Christy Galvin Scholarship Fund c/o Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation, 9201 University City Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28223.

Mr. and Mrs. Galvin escorted Christy back home to California. A memorial service will be held in California.
