Charlotte, N.C. - The Charlotte 49ers volleyball program made its first signings for the 2008 season as they add Sheri Davis, Leah Leventhal and Abbie Rees in the initial signing period. Davis is a setter from Cape Coral, Florida, Leventhal an outside hitter from Gainesville, Florida, while Rees is a libero and defensive specialist from Cincinnati.
"I am very excited about our first recruiting class," said Niners head coach Chris Redding. "We feel we were able to gain three people who excelled not only on the volleyball court, but in the classroom and in the community."
Davis played her prep volleyball at Evangelical Christian School in Ft. Myers, which just won a second state 2A championship in the last three seasons, while finishing as the state runner-up in her 2006 junior season. She has been a captain for the squad each of the last two years, while earning All-State and All-Area Honors for the past three seasons. She was selected as an AAU All-American from 2004 to 2006 and played for the USA South club team, which qualified for USA Volleyball's nationals five times while she played there. Davis was recently selected as South Florida's Player of the Year.
She has an older sister, Allison, who just completed her sophomore season at North Carolina State and was the setter on the title team at Evangelical from 2005. Also excelling in the classroom, she is a four-time A-Honor Roll Student and member of the National Honor Society, earning USAA National Merit Awards in science and math.
"Sheri was a great recruiting find for our staff," said Redding. "We feel that many major universities overlooked her, and they will all be sorry for that oversight. Sheri is a talented and experienced setter that we will look to come in and help improve our Sideout Offense."

"Leah is a very similar outside hitter to the ones we are graduating; big, strong, and physical," said Redding. "Leah will definitely add strength & power to our roster."
Rees played her prep volleyball at Mount Notre Dame High, where she was co-captain and earned first-team All-State and All-League. She also played for the Ohio High Performance Team and at the club level for Team Z, which took the 2007 National 17 Open Championship. Like Davis, she also has an older sister, Mindy, who just completed her junior volleyball season as the setter for the Loyola University-Chicago Ramblers.
"One element that Abbie brings is a very high level of volleyball experience and intelligence," said Redding. "Anytime you bring players in with her level of experience, it strengthens your program."
Charlotte recently completed its 2007 season at 15-13 overall, its third straight campaign of 15 or more wins. The 49ers were tied for second place in the Eastern Division of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
