Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte 49ers head women's volleyball coach Lisa Marston announced her resignation today, citing personal reasons surrounding a growing family. Marston led the 49ers to a 20-12 record this season and a second straight trip to the Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament.
"The decision to resign as Head Coach was an extremely difficult one," said Marston, who has spent seven of her 12-year head coaching career with the 49ers. "I love the sport of volleyball and I love coaching at Charlotte and I can't imagine doing anything else as a career. However, it is time to focus on my family and quality of life for my family. Cam and I are excited to be adding twins to our family and know that it will be a full-time job to raise our four kids."
The 49ers enjoyed their third straight winning season, this past year, posting the program's first 20-win season since 1994. Over the last three years, Charlotte has gone 56-42 (.571). That mark includes a 15-11 slate in two years of Atlantic 10 play.
In Marston's 14-year coaching career, which included seven years at Davidson, five as the head coach, she posted a 196-173 record (.531), including a 111-114 mark (.493) with the 49ers. She averaged 15.8 wins with the 49ers and had four seasons with 17 or more wins, including each of the last three.
Lisa brought both stability and a winning attitude to our program from the moment we hired her," said Charlotte Director of Athletics Judy Rose.
"Her recruitment of players expanded to a broader scope of seeking the best players available, regardless of where they were from. Most recently, the 49ers have been very competitive within the conference. As we search for a replacement, our goal remains the same, to compete at the highest level and be a consistent participant in post-season play."
Marston resigns as the third winningest coach in 49ers volleyball history, three wins shy of second all-time and four wins shy of 200 career victories. She was a two-time Southern Conference Coach of the Year (1998; 1999) during her days at Davidson and earned the school's first NCAA Tournament bid in women's sports in 1999. At Charlotte, Marston coached 11 all-conference players, including 2006 selections Cori Dayton (first team), Jessica Oldenburg (second team) and Lynae Mulder (second team) and the 49ers broke 22 team or individual records during her tenure.
"I will miss working with the players - an extraordinary group of ladies, and I am grateful that they will be well taken care of," Marston added. "I am so appreciative of the opportunities that Judy and (Senior Women's Administrator) Kim (Whitestone) have given me over the last 7 years. I will always be a part of the 49er family and wish nothing but the best for the department and volleyball program."
A national search for Marston's replacement will begin immediately.
