No. 23 Louisville earned the tournament's top seed with a perfect 13-0 league record. The 49ers finished the regular season in a five-way tie for eighth in the C-USA standings, after being selected 13th in the preseason coaches' poll. The team won 19 matches for the first time since posting a 22-13 record in 1994.
Charlotte's victory over DePaul last Saturday night pushed them ahead of the Blue Demons in the conference standings and set up a date with the Green Wave on Friday night. Charlotte defeated Tulane, 3-0 (30-27, 31-29, 30-20), on Oct. 23 at Halton Arena.
The winner of the Charlotte-Tulane match will play No. 3 Marquette in the tournament's second round. That game is also scheduled for an 8:00 pm start, on Saturday, Nov. 20.
Charlotte and Tulane have met 15 times in the programs' histories, with the Green Wave holding a 10-5 advantage. In addition to this year's victory, the 49ers also won regular-season meetings in 1991, 1993, 1998 and 1999. Tulane won five straight matches from 1999-2003, including a 3-0 victory over the Niners in the opening round of the 1999 C-USA Tournament in Tampa, Fla.
