49ers Take Home Four All-Conference, Two Academic Awards

Best-ever year-end haul for Charlotte Volleyball

Nov. 17, 2005

Philadelphia - Senior Lisa Newell and sophomore Alma Arroyo each earned first team All-Atlantic 10 honors, as Charlotte Volleyball captured a total of six year-end league awards on Wednesday night.

Newell and Arroyo were each named to the nine-woman All-Atlantic 10 first team in voting by the league's head coaches. Setter Eden Ramos was chosen second team All-A10, while libero Carly Romberg earned All-Rookie Team honors.

Additionally, Arroyo and Ramos were chosen to a seven-member Academic All-Conference team. That team was chosen on the basis of both academic and athletic performance.

It was the most-ever year-end conference awards for Charlotte Volleyball. The Niners joined Temple for the second-most award winners. Dayton and Xavier each had five players honored on the all-conference teams.

Newell and Arroyo are the first set of teammates in school history to earn first team all-league awards in the same season. Charlotte previously had five first team all-conference players in five different seasons.

They are also the first Charlotte volleyball players to win first team awards since Monica Holmes in 1992 (All-Metro Conference).

Lisa Newell, a Conference USA All-Freshman team selection in 2002, closes out a stellar four-year career with a first team All-A10 award. She had her most productive season this fall, ranking among the league's top 10 in hitting percentage, kills, points and blocks. Lisa was chosen as the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on October 3, the first time she earned that honor in her career.

Alma Arroyo picks up her first All-Conference award in just her second season at Charlotte, after posting one of the league's best breakthrough seasons. The sophomore outside hitter was second in the A-10 in kills per game for league matches (4.48) and finished third in points per game. She had over 20 kills on seven occasions and posted 12 double-doubles.

Alma was one of just two underclassmen on the first team, along with sophomore Yue Liu of Temple.

Arroyo was chosen as A-10 Player of the Week twice (9/19 and 10/10). That trailed only Dayton's Faye Barhorst, the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, who was Player of the Week three times this season.

Eden Ramos was chosen as the setter on the All-Atlantic 10 second team. It was the first all-conference award for the sophomore passer, who played in just 10 games as a freshman in 2004. Eden directed a potent 49ers attack that saw four hitters average over three kills per game and which broke the school's record for single-match hitting percentage for the second year in a row.

Eden actually led the league in assists this season, averaging 13.17 per game in A-10 matches, but was edged out by Dayton's Nicole Schott for Setter of the Year honors. Schott averaged 12.41 assists per game, but added 1.27 kills and 2.27 digs per game to help lead the Flyers to an 11-1 mark in league play.

5-foot-1 freshman libero Carly Romberg was chosen to the A10 All-Rookie team after averaging 4.25 digs per game in league matches. She finished the regular season ranked 7th in digs overall and 3rd in digs in A-10 matches. She went over 10 digs in 24 of 31 matches, logging over 20 digs eight times.

Arroyo and Ramos gave Charlotte the second-most players on the Academic All-Conference team, trailing only Xavier. Additionally, they were the only underclassmen chosen to a team otherwise consisting of four seniors and one junior.
