Arroyo and Romberg Earn High Honors in Atlantic 10 Volleyball

Romberg Honored for Digs Tally, Arroyo for Athletic and Academic Prowess

Nov. 16, 2007

Philadelphia, Pa. - Junior Carly Romberg was selected as the Atlantic 10 Libero of the Year, while senior Alma Arroyo was named A-10 Volleyball's Student-Athlete of the Year, conference officials announced yesterday. Both players were also named Honorable Mention All-Conference this season, with the announcement coming as a lead-in to the conference tournament, which takes place in Charlotte this weekend.

Romberg set the school-record for digs in a season at Charlotte by more than 50 with 533 digs. Her 5.86 per game average was tops in the conference and 17th in the NCAA this season. In conference play, she had an amazing 6.91 digs per match in conference matches only, also tops in the league by more than a dig and a half per game to the closest player. Each of her three seasons with Charlotte are in the top seven single-season digs totals in school history and she is just 85 digs from capturing the Charlotte career digs mark.

"Carly's game has been progressing since I arrived here back in January," said Charlotte head coach Chris Redding. "By the midway point of the season, we were able to change our defense so that she would be able to see & handle more of the opponent's attacks. She is one of the reasons we were able to lead the league in digs per game this year. I am very excited about returning the best Libero in the conference, and my expectations for Carly will be very lofty for the 2008 season."

Arroyo had a cumulative grade point average of 3.71 in Pre-Kinesiology at Charlotte, while maintaining excellence on the court. Earlier this season, she became the 14th player in Charlotte team history to eclipse the 1,000-kill mark in her career. She led the 49ers with 419 kills, or 4.32 per game, while adding 309 digs (3.19 per game). She finished third in the conference in kills, while fifth in the league in points (a combination of kills, service aces and blocks). Earlier, Arroyo was named ESPN the Magazine Second Team All-Academic District Three by the Sports Information Directors of America.

"I think that the Student-Athlete of the Year award is a special honor because it recognizes both a person's on-court and off-court accomplishments," noted Redding. "What makes this more special is that Alma overcame an injury that kept her from training the entire spring, yet she was able to contribute so much to our team's success this season."

Charlotte finished 15-13 overall, in a four-way tie for the final two playoff berths, losing out on tiebreakers to a spot in the A-10 Tournament. Romberg and a core of young players return for Charlotte next season. Charlotte has tallied 15 or more wins in each of its past four seasons and six of the last seven campaigns.
