HOUSTON - Charlotte begins play in the Healthy Choice Conference USA Tournament Thursday, taking on Saint Louis in the first round. The Niners have an all-time record of 2-6 in the C-USA Tournament. Last year, they beat Southern Miss in the first round, 3-0, before ending the year with a loss to Cincinnati in the quarterfinals. The 49ers enter the tournament as the 10th seed, which is where they were predicted to finish in the coaches' preseason poll. Saint Louis is the seventh seed. The Niners clinched their berth in the tournament last Friday, when they beat the Billikens, 3-1, in the teams' regular-season meeting. Five players reached double figures in kills, led by Kathleen Ramos 17 kills and 18 digs.
UP NEXT FOR CHARLOTTE
Should Charlotte advance, the 49ers will take on second seed Louisville on Friday in the quarterfinals. Charlotte is 1-17 all-time versus the Cardinals.
Louisville won both regular-season meetings this year by a 3-0 count. The last time the Niners beat the Cards was in 1997, when they won 3-1 on senior day.
AKGUN TOPS 1,000 CAREER KILLS
Esra Akgun became the ninth player in school history to top 1,000 career kills in the 49ers' 3-0 win over Davidson Oct. 30. Akgun knocked down 15 kills for Charlotte to finish the night with 1,006.
Akgun enters the Conference USA Tournament eighth in the school's record book with 1,053 kills. She has knocked down at least 10 kills in 11 matches this season.
